Exploring Puno
Attractions & Activities In Puno & Lake Titicaca
Even if your Peru travel plans don’t coincide with the Candelaria celebrations, Puno is still a captivating city to explore for a day or two before heading out on a Lake Titicaca tour. Start in the town itself where you can marvel at the exquisitely detailed floor and ceiling murals in the Church of San Pedro. Perhaps visit the Church of San Juan too, where the Virgin of Candelaria statue is stored in between her annual outing during the eponymous festival. Also worth seeing is the Puno Cathedral, which contains an ornate silver-plated altar.
For stellar views, ascend up the 700 stone steps to the observation point at the Kuntur Wasi archaeological site. At the top, an impressive condor statue with outspread wings watches over the city and out to the seemingly limitless lake. If you want to make the climb up to Kuntur Wasi, it is recommended that you go with a guide. Kuoda Travel will be happy to make all arrangements on your behalf so you can simply concentrate on enjoying your time in Puno.
