Uros Islands: Among the most fascinating lake inhabitants are the Uros people, who live on self-constructed floating islands. The islands were originally built for defensive reasons, as they could be easily moved if the inhabitants were threatened, and are constructed from the sturdy totora reed, a multipurpose plant that the Uros people also use for housing, food and medicine. Once every three months, the Uros people redo the top layer of reeds, which forms the island floor.

Taquile Islands: Still hungry for more cultural immersion? Consider a visit to Taquile Island, whose inhabitants are well-known for their skillful weavings. UNESCO have even honored the islanders’ textiles, declaring them “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” Because Taquile remained isolated from the mainland up until the mid-20th century, the islanders were rarely exposed to outside influences and many ancient traditions are preserved here.
