Taquile Island

In Taquile, which is located on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, some 2,200 Taquileños make a living through farming, fishing and the roaring tourism trade, which sees about 40,000 visitors make the journey to this far-flung island every year.

Weaving and knitting are in the blood here. Women traditionally weave, and men knit – both producing textile art so masterly and beautiful that UNESCO has recognized it as part of the “intangible heritage of humanity.”

There is, refreshingly enough, no motorized transport on the island and nary a smartphone or iPad in sight. Taquile island’s simple way of life makes it an incredibly appealing place to spend the night and the island offers a warm welcome to those who do choose to sleep here.
