Peru’s cosmopolitan capital was first founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, and its UNESCO-listed historic core is still endowed with extensive colonial architecture. History buffs will find plenty to keep them enthralled, from ancient temples such as America’s oldest city in Caral, an oracle center for the Norte Chico cultures, to the elaborate Baroque-style Lima Cathedral and the Convent of San Francisco.
While the city cradles its past, many of the residents have their eyes focused firmly on the future, constantly striving to create boundary-pushing food and cutting-edge art. Lima is not just Peru’s, but South America’s gastronomic capital and excellent restaurants aren’t difficult to find. Nor, for that matter, are exquisite world class services such as five-star hotels, fabulous museums, superb shopping, colonial architecture, archaeological sites and culture.Upscale Miraflores, which is sprinkled with restaurants, hotels and nightspots, is a great neighborhood to stay in during a family Peru trip. Bohemian Barranco, a hangout for artists, musicians and free spirits, also deserves some of your time, particularly after dark, when nightlife and live entertainment scenes flourish. Spend a little time in both to experience their unique spirit and energy.
Weather in Lima allows for a well-suited to outdoor life too. Warm weather combined with beaches and shore-line cliffs mean that activities such as surfing, hang-gliding and paragliding are also possible. Before embarking from Lima to Machu Picchu, enjoy this vibrant city for all that it is worth.
