Fabulous Museums
Attractions & Activities In Lima
Peru’s diverse and complex blend of indigenous and inherited cultures has provided rich pickings for the country’s museums. And nowhere more so than in Lima, where a cluster of the nation’s most lauded cultural institutions showcase exotic artifacts and unusual art, the likes of which can be found nowhere else on Earth.
Chief among them is the Larco Museum. Housed in a former mansion, which is itself built on the site of a pre-Columbian temple, this museum contains with three millennia’s worth of pottery, weavings, gold and silver artifacts as well as pre-Inca mummies. The standout show is the rather risqué and rare collection of erotic pottery. The prudish conquistadors, horrified by their explicitness, destroyed most of these salacious ceramics.
The granddaddy of Lima’s museum scene, the National Museum of Archaeology, also warrants a visit. This museum, which was founded in 1826, has a staggeringly vast collection. Ceramics, textiles, metalwork, photography and bibliographical displays are just a few facets of the comprehensive exhibitions, which span from the prehistoric era through to the present-day.
For those who are planning their customized tour to Peru’s capital should also consider visiting La Casa de Aliaga. This colonial mansion has been here since the conquistadors first founded the city and the same family has occupied it for more than 500 years. Inside, more than 50 rooms are outfitted with ornate furniture and colonial-era art. Access is only by private, guided tour; let us know if you’d like to visit and we’ll arrange it for you.
