Plaza de Armas

No personalized trip to Peru would be complete without seeing the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Peru. This is Cusco’s main square – its beating heart and the foremost hub of activity in the city. It’s where the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro declared his conquest of Cusco and where the Inca leader, Tupac Amaru, was violently put to death.

These days, the plaza is still the site of occasional political protests as well as celebrations and festivities. At any time of the day, there is always something happening here, which is why it makes such a good spot to stop, sit on the benches among the flower gardens and watch the people mulling about.

Bordering the square is Cusco’s Cathedral, recognizable by its ornate Renaissance architecture, and the Church of La Compania, whose equally ornate façade almost rivals that of the main cathedral for its beauty and size. On either side of the plaza are colonial-style arcades, which are lined with shops and restaurants. In the evening, the plaza is extra picturesque – the Gothic church façades and central fountains are illuminated by the mellow glow of spotlights.
