Qorikancha
Attractions & Activities In Cusco & The Sacred Valley
Qorikancha, is a former religious complex located just a few blocks southeast of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, which was once considered the crown jewel of the ancient Inca capital. It was also known as the Golden Enclosure and was dedicated to the highest gods in the Incan relm such as the creator god Viracocha, the moon goddess called Quilla and to the Sun God, Inti. The interior of what was then an extraordinary lavish temple was adorned with gold-lined walls and solid gold sculptures. When Spanish conquerors came to assert their dominance over Cusco, they seized the gold and melted it down for their own use, before destroying the temple. Only the Inca foundations, which today prop up a Spanish cathedral, were kept and all that remains of the original temple is the painstakingly constructed stonework.
