San Blas Artisan's Neighborhood

The picturesque neighborhood of San Blas is threaded with a labyrinthine network of narrow streets, some of which are pedestrian-only. It’s a place to wander without a plan and yield to the distractions it throws up. Every corner turned reveal inviting diversions, whether the tempting aroma of baked goods wafting from a bakery or the colorful window displays of an independent artisan shops, a bustling Saturday market stocked with handicrafts or a workshop run by the neighborhood’s expat community.

You might stop to admire the cascading fountain on its small central plaza or call into the church on the side of this square, which is reputed to be the oldest parish church in Cusco. Within it lies an exquisite cedar wood pulpit featuring a highly ornamental Churrigueresque (Spanish Baroque-style) carving, which is considered to be among the finest examples of woodworking anywhere on Earth.

At the eastern border of San Blas, ancient stone staircases lead all the way up to the Incan ruins of Sacsayhuaman. Climbing these steps affords spectacular views over Cusco’s carpet of red-tiled roofs as well as the surrounding countryside.
