Yalape Archaeological Ruins
Attractions & Activities in Chachapoyas & Kuelap
The Yalape archaeological ruins are just a 40-minutes’ drive away from Chachapoyas. Covering almost 10 acres of land, it is believed that the far-reaching complex once served as an urban center and residential zone for the Chachapoyas culture from about 1100 to 1300 AD.
At the ruins, you’ll find typical Chachapoyas architecture and design, including the culture’s characteristic circular buildings and artistic details, including elaborate high relief friezes of zigzag and rhomboid patterns like those found at Kuelap.
The entire complex was constructed with stone bricks and mud mortar. It’s a shock that so much of it is still intact today, albeit many sections are buried beneath Amazon jungle overgrowth.
