The Sarcophagi of Karajia are a series of six pre-Inca burial coffins carved from mud and stone that stand 2 to 2 ½ meters tall on a limestone cliff high above a river gorge. Originally there were eight sarcophagi, but earthquakes and other natural causes have dropped the count to six. Fortunately, their isolated location has protected the tombs for more than 600 years from destruction by looters.
It is believed that the figures were created by the Chachapoyas culture to house the remains of nobility and the most important citizens. Their shape and form is fascinating in that they resemble six limbless torsos with large heads and strong jawlines, each figure adorned with either horns or human skulls and signature geometric Chachapoyas designs.
