Sonche Canyon
Attractions & Activities in Chachapoyas & Kuelap
The Sonche Canyon is the Amazonas region’s deepest canyon located near the sleepy jungle village of Huancas, just 10 kilometers from Chachapoyas. The 962-meter (3,156 feet) deep canyon stretches for 11 kilometers (7 miles).
Whether you take in the dizzying views from the mirador by the entrance or walk the three hours to Huanca Urco Hill for a glimpse of the Sonche, Vitaya, and Utcubamba Rivers joining together, the experience is truly magical. On a clear day, you may even spot the upper portions of the Gocta Waterfall in the distance.
If walking isn’t your preference, it’s also possible to rent a horse and ride the trails that connect the canyon’s two major viewpoints, an unforgettable experience to behold.
