Wonder Islands

The Galapagos Islands are legendary among travelers who extol the wildlife assets of this Pacific archipelago. The volcanic isles, which span both sides of the equator, became a household name after Charles Darwin famously used them as a natural laboratory in which to develop his theory of evolution, as well as recounting his explorations here in his book, “The Voyage of the Beagle.” Though more than a century has passed since Darwin catapulted the islands into the global spotlight and many travelers have been and gone, the Galapagos Islands still remain a kind of earthly Eden – as yet unspoiled and still replete with abundant local fauna.

The archipelago consists of 18 large and three small islands, with numerous rocks and islets. Each island has its own particular draw. On Bartholomew Island, for instance, visitors can observe the Galapagos Penguin, the only equatorial penguin species on Earth. On Darwin Island, fur seals, frigate birds, sea lions, marine turtles, the red-footed booby and nazca booby all make their home. On the oldest island – Española – you’ll find an array of local species, including lava lizards, hooded mockingbirds, and red marine iguanas. Perhaps the most incredible aspect of the Galapagos is not the variety of animals, but rather their response to humans: most seem totally unfazed by the presence of camera-toting tourists, so you can get up close without bothering them.

For wildlife lovers, a luxury tour of the Galapagos is a dream come true. But even if you don’t consider yourself an animal enthusiast, it’s still a worthy destination – these islands have a habit of making wildlife devotees out of all of us.
