Temples of the Sun & Moon
Attractions & Activities In Trujillo & Chiclayo
The Temples of the Sun & Moon, together known as the Temples of Moche, are found just over three miles south of Trujillo. These two pyramid-like adobe structures were constructed by the mysterious Moche people, who ruled the northern coast of Peru between A.D. 100 and 800.
The Temple of the Sun is the larger of the two and is assumed to have been used for administrative and governmental purposes. Legend has it that it took 250,000 workers just three days to build this monumental structure using 70 million adobe bricks. The walls of the smaller Temple of the Moon are plastered with distinctive murals depicting the Moche creator God, Ai Apeac. This temple is thought to have been used for religious and ritual ceremonies.
This revealing archaeological site sheds light on this little-known yet successful ancient civilization, who once dominated the desert regions of northern Peru.
