Huanchaco is a surfer’s dream. Not only was it the fifth site ever to be designated a World Surfing Reserve, but it also hosts several surfing competitions, among them the Huanchaco Longboard World Championships, which is held every year in January and attracts surfers from all over the globe.

Huanchaco also claims to be the birthplace of surfing. Since ancient times, fishers have been riding caballitos de totora (reed boats), occasionally standing up to catch waves, much like modern surfers do. Many believe these reed boats were a precursor to surfing. Trujillo’s beaches offer the best of both worlds, adventure and leisure!
