Cabo Blanco is a historic fishing village outside of Mancora. In the 1950’s and 60’s, A-list celebrities and big-game fisherman flocked to its shores for a chance to catch a “grander,” the nickname for the prevalent 1,000-pound marlins that could be found there. The biggest catch recorded was, and still is, the 1,560-pound black marlin by game fisherman Alfred Glassell, Jr. in 1953.
In 1956, Ernest Hemingway was in town to oversee the filming of his book-turned-movie, “The Old Man and the Sea”. He, too, couldn’t resist the lure of the so-called Marlin Boulevard and wound up catching a 910-pounder during his stay.
Today, due to an increase in anchovy and a disrupted food chain, the waters off the coast of Cabo Blanco haven’t produced a 1000-pound marlin in over 50 years. However, you will likely still spot a deep sea fishing boat or two offshore trolling for marlin, Bluefin tuna, and mahi mahi.
These days, Cabo Blanco is more famous for its “Peruvian Pipeline,” a perfect hollow powerful left wave often likened to Hawaii’s Bonzai Pipeline. Experienced surfers from around the world congregate in Cabo Blanco during the months of November to January for a chance to ride this renowned pipeline wave.
