Manu National Park is the largest national park in Peru, covering an area of more than 5,790 square miles. Founded in 1973 the reserve covers terrain ranging between 120 and 4,200 meters above sea level. This vast, undeveloped swath of land encompasses a variety of ecological zones, from the lowland Amazon jungle up to the Andean highlands.

The biodiversity of this park is simply astonishing. It contains more than 222 species of mammals, 15,000 plants, 1,307 butterflies and more than 1,000 different bird species. To put that in context, that’s more than all the avian species found in the U.S. and Canada combined. In 2014, Manu broke biodiversity records when researchers studying the forest found that it hosted 287 reptiles and amphibian species, more than any other national reserve in the world. With such a high level of biodiversity, it comes to no surprise in 1987 it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
