UNESCO World Heritage Site
Attractions & Activities In Machu Picchu
The Lost City of the Incas was created at the height of the Inca Empire around 1450, and was later abandoned during the time of the Spanish Conquest. Most accounts say it was “lost” for the following three centuries, but locals were very much aware of its presence. It was the rest of the world who were oblivious. That is, up until 1911, when it was “rediscovered” by American explorer Hiram Bingham.
In 1983, UNESCO designated Machu Picchu a World Heritage Site, describing its setting as “the scenically most attractive mountainous territory of the Peruvian Andes.” High praise, and indeed, it could be argued that even if there were no ruins to see, the setting, scenery and cloud forest ecology would make this a worthy destination regardless.
