Huayna Picchu
Attractions & Activities In Machu Picchu
Huayna Picchu, meaning “Young Man” in Quechua, is the towering peak behind Machu Picchu. Like Machu Picchu itself, this was Inca territory. Not only did the ancient people carve a trail up the side of the mountain, but they also erected several temples and terraces at its summit. It is said that the high priest lived at the top along with several sacred virgins.
Private tours to Machu Picchu can include a trek up Huayna Picchu. However, because site access is limited to 400 people per day, it’s best to get tickets in advance. The descent will lead past yet more Inca ruins, such as the Temple of the Moon and the Great Cavern.
