World's Highest National Capital

At 11,000 feet, La Paz is among the highest urban settlements in the world. And if the altitude here doesn’t make you dizzy, the views from the city’s highest points certainly will. So unique is La Paz’s setting that it was even voted as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities in 2014.

And indeed, this urban hub is a marvel to look at – its sprawling slope-side cityscape is framed by the three peaks of Mount Illimani, which vary in height from 10,500 feet to 13,500 feet. Of course, like most large cities, the social divides are evident, with the wealthier inhabitants living in the lower-altitude neighborhoods like Prado and the poorer residents confined to the higher, harder-to-access areas.

The history of La Paz is equally fascinating. It was originally occupied by the Native American Laja people, and the present-day city was founded by Conquistadors in 1548, who named it Nuestra Señora de La Paz, meaning Our Lady of Peace. Elements from both indigenous Aymara and Spanish cultures mix and mingle here, and you’re as likely to see a traditional ritual, ceremony or procession as you are a colonial church.
