Attractions & Activities In La Paz

History enthusiasts who find themselves in the La Paz region during their private Bolivia holiday won’t want to miss Tiahuanaco. Located about 43 miles from La Paz, this pre-Columbian archaeological site was once a major center for the ancient people who lived here, who were believed to thrive between A.D. 500 and A.D. 1000. So valuable and revealing is the complex that UNESCO listed it a World Heritage site in 2000. So just who created this incredible site? What can be garnered from the ruins is that the people behind them were part of a surprisingly advanced civilization; the intricate nature and aesthetic beauty of the artifacts found here indicate that they were highly sophisticated.

The purpose of the sight was likely religious and ceremonial, as indicated by the temples and pyramids. Among the most impressive structure is the Pyramid of Akapana, which – though now partially ruined – once contained seven ascending platforms and was surrounded by impressively tall stone walls. Also worth checking out is the grand open temple of Kalasasaya, identifiable by the seven-step stairway that leads to the entrance.

The complex is also said to contain evidence suggesting that terraced agriculture was practiced here. Though agricultural terraces are most frequently associated with the Incas, these early examples suggest that the farming technique may have even originated here before spreading to other regions.

The best way to see a sight like this is on a private tour. That way, your guide can help explain the functions of each buildings and stoke your imagination so you can better picture what life may have been like here during its heyday.
