Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

In 1982, the Peruvian government deemed this 8,000-square-mile patch a national reserve, thus protecting the many thousands of different plant and animal species within it. More than 250 fish species reside in its waters and more than 109 land mammals make their home within its boundaries. Rounding out the diverse population are more than 60 reptile species, 50 amphibians, 400 birds and 1,200-plus plant varieties.

But it’s not just about numbers; it’s also about visibility. In the smaller tributaries of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, you won’t have to look too hard as creatures frequently parade themselves here. Caimans, unperturbed by human presence often poke their heads out of the water; flocks of herons frequently cross from bank to bank without a bother; macaws and monkeys hop about the treetops; and sloths lounge on leafy branches.

Though the chances are slimmer, it’s also possible that you might get a peek at one of the reserve’s endangered species.
