The Maras Salt Mines in the Sacred Valley are a stunning patchwork of more than 3,000 geometric salt pools cascading down the valley wall. A natural hot spring feeds the stream that flows down into the pools. Through a process of evaporation, the salt forms and is later harvested by the local community and shipped off to markets throughout Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

This site is yet another amazing feat of the Incas. In the 1400s they created the hillside salt pools and harvested the salt in much the same way as the local community still does today.
