Attractions & Activities In The Nazca Lines
These famous geoglyphs were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Between 1,500 and 2,500 years ago, the Nazca people of Peru carved these drawings into this desert floor. The geoglyphs are monumental in size; some of them are more than 1,640 feet in length, while a few of the more simple line drawings extend for more than 4.3 miles. Because of the scale of the geoglyphs, they are best viewed either from air or from the nearby hills.
In most places of the world, wind, rain and erosion would mean these kinds of drawings would be wiped away in a matter of years. Thanks to the dry, windless climate of Nazca, however, they have managed to survive mostly intact though concerns have recently arose about the impact of human interference at the site. So much so that in August, 2015, the U.S. Ambassadors’ Fund for Cultural Preservation set aside funds to survey, delimit and preserve the Nazca Lines – a hopeful sign that they will be protected so that future generations can still marvel at their beauty in a way that doesn’t impact their preservation.
