Huacachina Lagoon & Legend

In the midst of the dry and barren Peruvian desert lies the Huacachina Lagoon, an extraordinarily picturesque, unexpected settlement, built around a shimmering oasis. When viewed from afar after even a short walk under the hot Peruvian sun, you’d be forgiven for thinking it a mirage. But this natural palm-lined lagoon around which this diminutive town is built is very much real.

Legend has it the lake is home to a mermaid. And how did she come to be here? When she was a young woman, she was caught off-guard by a hunter while bathing. Shocked, she immediately jumped out of the pool she was bathing in; this would become the lagoon. As she ran, the water streaming from her dress became the surrounding sand dunes. She then transformed herself into a mermaid and dove back into the water.

You could spend an hour or two paddling or swimming in the tranquil waters of the lake, while trying to spot the poor mythical mermaid, but the real fun is to be had out on the sand dunes.
