Visiting Native Communities
Attractions & Activities In The Ecuadorian Amazon
For many people, the most interesting and intriguing aspect of the Amazon is the hardy tribes that manage to survive here in what seems to outsiders as an unaccommodating and danger-filled environment. During your luxury tour of the Amazon, you will be able to meet one such group: the Huaorani warrior tribe.
The Huaorani backstory is utterly fascinating: Up until the mid-20th century, they lived as hunter-gatherers, feeding off the land and living totally in harmony with their surrounds. In 1956, however, they came in contact with the outside world.
Though their territory was once vast, it has been greatly reduced and their traditional lifestyle – so dependent on the nature around them – has been threatened by logging and petroleum exploration. Today, only about 2,500 Hoaorani remain living in this region across 24 settlements. During this personalized tour, you’ll be given the opportunity to meet people from both the Neoneno and the Bameno Hoarani communities. Immerse yourself in their world as you learn about their ways of life, which are strikingly different than ours in the modern world. You can see how they plant, harvest and cook, as well as learning about their use of medicinal plants. You may even get the chance to try out their spears and blowguns, which Huaorani hunters continue to employ to catch prey. The blowgun darts are dipped in curare (a plant-based poison) which causes paralysis and eventual death.
This trip is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience and provides a rare opportunity to get to know an authentic and recently contacted Amazon warrior tribe. Contact us and get a free Ecuador trip quote today which will be personally designed for you by one of our travel experts here at Kuoda Travel.
