Middle of the Earth
Attractions & Activities In Quito, Middle Of The World
If you’re looking for the middle of the world near Quito, then you’ve come to the right place. Well, sort of. The monument that marks the middle of the world is located in a government state park in San Antonio de Pichincha and there’s a yellow line near it that supposedly marks the boundary between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
The line was drawn by the French Geodesic Mission, who – as it turns out – were a little off with their calculations. Sophisticated technology has been used to pinpoint the real middle of the world (it’s 787 feet north of this location), though visitors still come to this monument to get photos of them straddling the not-quite-equator! If you want to stand on the authentic middle of the world, just drive two minutes north to a site known as Inti-ñan. Plans to erect a new monument at the true middle of the world are currently in the works. For now, though, you can visit both sites – the not-quite middle and the true middle – during your private tour to Ecuador.
