Multicolor Lagoons

Contrasting with the blank whiteness of the Uyuni’s salt desert are two colorful salt lakes in the region, which can be visited as part of your luxury tour of the Uyuni Salt Flats. One is the Laguna Verde, which lies close to the Chilean border. This lake is renowned for its vibrant green color, which comes from the minerals in its water. The Salt Flats other colorful lake, Laguna Colorada, gives off an intense red hue thanks to the algae and sediment on the surface. Flamingos are often seen nesting here; their pink plumage clashing with the blood-red color of the lake. Rhea (a flightless relative of the ostrich) can be found near the lake, and some travelers even report seeing the odd herd of vicuñas, a rare and elegant relative of the alpaca which has been extensively hunted for its soft coat.
