The 41 Islands

Lake Titicaca is a place of superlatives: It is the largest lake in South America, the world’s highest navigable lake and – many would argue – the most beautiful. Fed by five major rivers, it spans the border between Peru and Bolivia, occupying space in both countries. Though the sheer size of the body of water is impressive, as is its indescribable scenery, it is the lake’s 41 islands that steal the limelight.

Travelers undertaking personalized tours to Peru or Bolivia can include island visits on their itinerary. Among the best islands for hiking and history is Isla del Sol, which is located on the Bolivian side of the lake near the larger shoreside town of Copacabana. With about 800 families living on it, Isla del Sol is one of the largest islands on Titicaca. Those who take time to explore it will find scores of Inca ruins and scenic viewpoints that look out over the glistening lake and distant mountains.

Isla del Sol’s smaller neighbor, Isla de la Luna (Moon Island) is another popular port of call. Ruins of an old temple found here indicate that it was inhabited by the ancient Tiahuanaco people between A.D. 650 to A.D. 1000. Later, the Incas would arrive replacing the older temple with their own structure, the remains of which can still be seen today.

With ruins, panoramic viewpoints and unique island-dwelling cultures, Lake Titicaca’s intriguing islands are a must for curious travelers.
