A playground for adrenaline junkies, Argentina has its rough and varied geography to thank for that. It’s a country of extremes, home to the highest point (Mount Aconcagua, 6,960 m/22,834 ft) and the lowest point (Laguna del Carbón, -105 m/-344 ft) in the western hemisphere, as well as the hottest (120.4 °F at Villa Maria) and coldest (−38.2 °F at Valle de los Patos Superior, San Juan) temperatures in all of South America.

Trust us, a trip to Argentina means a breadth of adventure at your fingertips, no matter where your custom Argentina itinerary takes you. Here are 5 extreme adventures to be had on your Argentina holiday.

1. Paragliding with Condors in Córdoba

Condors in Córdoba

Condors cordoba

Paragliding is an adventure in and of itself, but your Argentina trip could include paragliding with these famous Andean birds of 3-meter wingspans. Though there are a few different sites across Northern Argentina in which you can do this, Córdoba, and more specifically La Cumbre, is the place to target for your paragliding adventure. The launch site is located just outside town in the Río Pintos valley at a cliff named Cuchi Corral.

2. Kayaking in Peninsula Valdez During Whale Mating Season

Peninsula Valdez

Peninsula Valdez

Kayaking Patagonia’s crystal clear waters is spectacular enough, but sharing the bay with colossal Southern Right whales takes the experience to a different level. From fall to spring, these whales travel from Antarctica to mate in the Peninsula Valdez, making it one of the best places in the world to go whale watching, and certainly to go kayaking.

3. Zip Lining in Iguazu

Iguazu

Iguazu

Glide through the treetops of Iguaza Forest with the famous Iguazu Falls as your backdrop, keeping your eye out for toucans as you go. You’ll pass over streams and through dense jungle housing more than 2,000 plant species and 400 types of birds. This is an Argentina travel experience that will have you pinching yourself to make sure it’s real.

4. Mountain Biking Circuito Chico

Mountain Biking

Located outside the mountain town of Bariloche, Circuito Chico is a breathtaking mountain biking circuit along the pristine Nahuel Huapi Lake and beneath the soaring Andes mountains. The full circuit is about 60 kilometers, but there are options to cut it short without missing a single must-see viewpoint. Don’t leave this nature lover’s haven and active adventure out of your personalized Argentina vacation.

5. Trekking Mount Fitz Roy

Trekking

If you do just one trek on your Argentina holiday, let it be Mount Fitz Roy located outside Argentina’s “trekking capital” of El Chalten in Los Glaciers National Park. The mountain itself towers 11,000 feet over the scenic lake-strewn landscape and web of hiking trails. Pick a short day hike or go for the full five-day trek. Either way, the surrounding snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes will leave you speechless (and breathless).

If paragliding, kayaking, ziplining, mountain biking, and trekking aren’t your variety of extreme adventure, we’ll help you find the Argentina travel experiences that are. Contact a Kuoda Travel Designer today to begin planning your custom Argentina tour package.

Top Six Things to Do While Visiting the Galapagos Islands https://www.kuodatravel.com/top-six-things-to-do-while-visiting-the-galapagos-islands/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/top-six-things-to-do-while-visiting-the-galapagos-islands/#respond Thu, 13 Sep 2018 14:18:07 +0000 https://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=28811

The Galapagos Islands are bucket list-worthy for more than a few reasons. 620 miles off the coast of Ecuador, not only did this island chain serve as the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s famous Theory of Evolution, but it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site two times over (both land and sea are protected). From the vast range of wildlife to the sandy white beaches, volcanic landscapes, and unique local culture, your tailormade trip to Ecuador should definitely include a visit to the Galapagos Islands. When you visit the Galapagos Islands, don’t miss these six things to do:

1. Snap a Photo Next to a Giant Galapagos Tortoise at Rancho Primicias
Giant Tortoise

Giant Tortoise, Galapagos

Right up there with red and blue-footed boobies are the Galapagos Islands’ famous Giant Tortoises, and there’s no better place to see them than at Rancho Primicias on Santa Cruz Island. Less crowded than the island’s more popular El Chato Tortoise Reserve, Rancho Primicias is a privately-owned animal sanctuary brimming with these captivating giants. Though you can’t touch or feed them, you will have plenty of photo ops to take away the ultimate Galapagos Islands vacation souvenir.

2. Explore the Lava Tunnels on Santa Cruz Island
Lava Tunnels

Lava Tunnels, Santa Cruz Island

Bellavista Village in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island is home to lava tubes and tunnels large enough to walk through. By the light of your flashlight, wander through tunnels as long as 1,200 feet and marvel at these impressive 23-foot high tubes that once contained molten lava. When the flow of lava eventually ceased, the tunnels cooled and hardened to form this magnificent result. Be sure to pencil this unique experience into your custom Galapagos Tour.

3. Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station
Charles Darwin Research Center

Charles Darwin Research Center

If you’re the scientific type, the Charles Darwin Research Center is a must-stop on your Galapagos Islands tour. The site features an active breeding center maintained by a team of conservation researchers, volunteers, and educators. They have set up plenty of informational displays for you to read up on the Galapagos Islands’ unique ecology and history. You may even spot a few Giant Tortoises roaming the property during your visit.

4. Experience the Fish Market at Puerto Ayora
Santa Cruz Island

Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos

Puerto Ayora is the Galapagos Island’s primary residential town located on Santa Cruz Island. Full of restaurants, shops, and a low-key nightlife, the Puerto Ayora Fish Market is a nice cultural complement to an otherwise wildlife and outdoor adventure-heavy visit to the Galapagos Islands. Watch the fisherman unload their catch of the day, batting off pelicans looking to steal the bounty. By sundown, the market transforms into an outdoor restaurant with nothing but fresh seafood on the menu and at great prices too.

5. Snorkel or Dive Devil’s Crown on Floreana Island
Snorkel and dive in the Galapagos

Snorkel and dive in the Galapagos

There are more than a few spots to dive beneath the Galapagos Islands’ turquoise waves, but Devil’s Crown off the coast of Floreana Island is notorious for being one of the best places to snorkel and dive in the Galapagos. The site got its name for its crown-like shape of jagged rocks, a crown only the devil would wear. This former volcanic crater now attracts a plethora of colorful reef fish. Some snorkelers have even spotted Hammerhead Sharks, White-tipped Reef Sharks, sea turtles, and large Manta rays, while others have had the good fortune of sharing the water with a curious sea lion or two.

6. Hike to Volcano Sierra Negra on Isabela Island
Volcano Sierra Negra, Galapagos

Volcano Sierra Negra, Galapagos

If you’re up for a little land-based adventure, add the Volcano Sierra Negra hike to your personalized Galapagos Islands travel itinerary. Not only is Volcano Sierra Negra one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos, but its crater is six miles wide, making it the second largest volcanic caldera in the world. This hike takes you up to Sierra Negra’s rim and then across its otherworldly caldera of surreal geologic and active geothermal features. On the way back, you’ll pass lava fields and fumaroles spewing steam and gas.

Plan your visit to the Galapagos Islands with an expert Kuoda Travel Designer and piece together the custom Galapagos trip of your dreams.

Cusco New Restaurant: A Must-Visit in Your Custom Peru Trip https://www.kuodatravel.com/cusco-new-restaurant-a-must-visit-in-your-custom-peru-trip/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/cusco-new-restaurant-a-must-visit-in-your-custom-peru-trip/#respond Mon, 30 Jul 2018 21:15:26 +0000 https://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=28144

For some, a trip to Peru is as much about visiting Machu Picchu as it is about taking a bite out of Peruvian cuisine. As Cusco is likely on your Peru trip itinerary, we have a new restaurant to suggest for you: Mil. This restaurant perched 500 meters above the archaeological complex of Moray is run by none other than Virgilio Martinez, the chef behind the famous Central in Lima.

The Concept
MIL Restaurant

Mil offers a creative 8-course menu

Like Central, Mil offers a creative 8-course menu that takes you on a journey through Peru’s high altitude ecosystems. The underlying mission behind Mil is to introduce diners to ancient local ingredients and culinary practices in the hope of bringing them back from the brink of extinction.  The restaurant   in cooperation with the nearby farming communities of Kacllaraccay and Mullaka’s-Misminay.

Martinez’s well thought out mission is evident in every course, or “moment” as the menu calls it. Diners can engage with and play a role in the revival of these ancient ingredients and techniques while dining next to the very Incan agricultural complex that was once used to produce the ingredients on their plates.

The Moments
andean reataurant

Culinary Adventure

Without spoiling the culinary adventure that is dining at Virgilio Martinez’s Mil, we’ll let you in on a few of the moments, or creative courses you can expect during your dining experience.

Preservation: not your average chip and dip, this dish employs an age-old technique practiced by the local community involving potatoes doused in a flow of cold water, then sunlight, and finally freeze-dried.

  • Andean Forest: a beautiful dish of colorful lupinus legumes served in a leche de tigre sauce.
  • Diversity of Corn: similar to muesli, this course features native varieties of corn including white corn, chullpi, and piscoronto.
  • Extreme Altitude: featuring blue-green algae plucked from an Andean lake, this course introduces alpaca and black quinoa to you palate, staple food products of the high Andes.
How To Get To Mil
MIL Restaurant

500 meters from the Archaeological Complex of Moray

The address is quite literally “ascending 500 meters from the Archaeological Complex of Moray.” In this way, the restaurant’s location is idyllic, if not slightly out of the way and high altitude (11,706 feet above sea level).

From Cusco, Mil is about a 90-minute drive by private vehicle or 15 minutes from the nearest town of Maras. We recommend having your reservation coincide with a day trip into the Sacred Valley and visits to the adjacent archaeological complex of Moray and Maras Salt Mines before or after your unforgettable meal.

Will Mil Be On Your Peru Itinerary?

Let your Kuoda Travel Designer know that Mil is on your must-do list in Peru and we’ll sort out the rest of the details for you, from reservations, transportation to and from the restaurant, and where it best fits into your itinerary.

Medicinal Plants and Herbs of the Peruvian Amazon and How To Use Them https://www.kuodatravel.com/medicinal-plants-herbs-peruvian-amazon-use/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/medicinal-plants-herbs-peruvian-amazon-use/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 16:07:15 +0000 https://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=24777

The use of plants and herbs to treat human maladies dates back thousands of years and yet the mystery remains as to how the ancients were able to discover the myriad of uses for plants to treat human maladies. However this knowledge was derived, there is a time-honored tradition for the use of herbal remedies in Peru and all of South America.

In this blog post, we’ll take a brief look at three medicinal plants native to the Amazon region of Peru and discuss their uses. Think of this as part of your Amazon vacation primer.

Sangre de Grado

Sangre de Grado (Croton Lechieri) is a tree that grows in the Amazon region of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia; it has the common English name of Dragon’s Blood. Its dark red latex (liquid sap) is used to close wounds, forming a barrier almost like a second skin, when applied to the injured area. It is also used to treat stomach ulcers, bleeding gums, bone fractures, insect bites and other skin conditions, and is taken internally for diarrhea. Its earliest recorded use dates from the 1600’s, but of course indigenous people used it centuries prior to this.

Uña de Gato

Uña de gato, or Cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a climbing plant native to the Amazon region of Peru. A related species, Uncaria guianensis, is often confused with U.tomentosa. The two plants have different uses in alternative medicine, but the more heavily researched is U. tomentosa. It has been used as a general immune stimulant, to treat arthritic conditions by reducing pain and inflammation, and to treat exhaustion due to stress. It is under study for the treatment of serious illnesses like cancer and AIDS. Dr. Fernando Cabieses, a well-known neurologist from Lima, has written a book on the current research being conducted on this plant, entitled The Saga of the Cat’s Claw.

Ajo Sacha

Ajo Sacha (Mansoa Alliacea) meaning “false garlic” is an evergreen shrub that is native to the rainforests of Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, the Guyanas and Costa Rica. It is especially abundant in the Madre de Dios and Ucayali Rivers in the Peruvian Amazon.  It tastes and smells like garlic. It is used to reduce pain and inflammation, as a muscle relaxant and fever reducer and in the treatment of colds, flus and viruses. It is also considered to be a magical plant that is capable of repelling evil spirits, and is sometimes used in ayahuasca brews as an adjunct ingredient.

The Importance of the Amazon Rainforest

There are thousands upon thousands of unidentified plants in the Amazon region of Peru whose uses for humans have not yet been discovered.  This is only one important reason that preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest is crucial for human life on this planet.

Your personal Amazon guide will be able to share more with you on the plants and herbs of the Peruvian Amazon during your private Peru vacation. Contact a Kuoda Travel Designer today to begin planning your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Peru.

How to Mingle with the Locals in Cusco https://www.kuodatravel.com/how-to-mingle-with-the-locals-in-cusco/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/how-to-mingle-with-the-locals-in-cusco/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 10:00:15 +0000 https://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=24867

Most travelers come to Peru to visit Machu Picchu and perhaps hike the Inca Trail or they come to see some of the local landmarks, historic churches, museums, and the majestic Andes, its valleys, canyons, and breathtaking snow-capped peaks. What many travelers to Peru fail to do is engage and connect with the locals who live just a few steps off the beaten tourist trail.  This is an unfortunate tourist misstep that happens all too often.

With Kuoda we make sure our guests don’t miss the opportunity to get to know the heart and soul of Peru through not only its stunning attractions but also through its spirited people. No vacation in Peru would be complete without both elements.

Below we share a few tips for travelers wishing to mingle with the locals in Cusco, the ancient city on everyone’s Peru itinerary.

Tip #1

Get outside of the main tourist areas. That’s where you can witness local life at its most authentic.

how-to-mingle-with-the-locals-in-cusco-local-life-sacsayhuaman

Tip #2

Look for the red flags or red plastic bags protruding from doorways for a chance to sample chicha, a popular Peruvian beer made from fermented corn.

Tip #3

On a Sunday, head up to the Christo Blanco statue and its environs for a glimpse into how the locals spend their downtime. We’ll bet you’re going to see more than one pachamanca in progress.

Tip #4

Take a few Spanish or Quechua lessons and try your skills at one of the local markets.

Grab a seat at the juice stand and converse with those around you, a favorite pastime of the locals.

Tip #6

Hop in a local bus or combi to explore a new neighborhood outside the tourist center, but remember to check with your guide to find out which neighborhoods are considered safe for you to visit.

Tip #7

Take part in a local community project, from volunteering at a local school to helping out at an animal shelter.

Tip #8

Grab a bite to eat from a street food stand and practice your Spanish with the “caserita” (street vendor) or the other locals joining you.

The wonderful thing about Peru, and especially Cusco, is how warm and inviting the locals are. They are usually very curious about tourists and appreciate your show of effort to get to know them on their turf.  So, don’t be shy. Strike up a conversation, go where the locals go, and join the soccer game. This is how you make your Peru travel experience magical and absolutely unforgettable.

On the Trail and Off the Pot: How to Stay Healthy during Your Peru Vacation https://www.kuodatravel.com/trail-off-pot-stay-healthy-peru-vacation/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/trail-off-pot-stay-healthy-peru-vacation/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 17:17:46 +0000 https://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=21816

So you’ve finally made plans to visit Peru – it’ll be the trip of a lifetime. You’ll explore Machu Picchu, visit famous ruins, indulge in the amazing cuisine, maybe even get to experience the Amazon Jungle! The last thing you need is to be laid out with traveler’s diarrhea, the most common health issue encountered by visitors to Peru.

Here are some tips for how to avoid spending a large part of your Peru trip in the bathroom instead of on the trail.

1. Avoid the Tap Water

If you want to stay well during your Peru vacation, avoid drinking the tap water. Especially cautious travelers will even want to brush their teeth with water that’s been boiled. There are several options for safe drinking water while in Peru:

  • You can boil tap water (at least five minutes, ten minutes if you are at high altitude) and let it cool.
  • Add iodine or water purification tablets to tap water.
  • Buy bottled water. This has the disadvantage of creating pollution from the plastic bottles; bringing your own refillable thermos is highly recommended.

2. Always Ask

When dining out, remember to ask whether raw veggies and fruits are being washed in purified water, and only eat them if the answer is yes. Also ask the same about ice. Additionally, it’s safer to peel fruits and veggies when eating them raw.

3. Follow the Crowds

This-Healthy-during-Your-Vacation-in-Peru-food-causa

If you’re a culinary adventurer, you won’t want to miss out on some of the wonderful varieties of street foods found in Peru. Of course, it is impossible to be totally sure that the food is safe, but here are a couple of questions to ask yourself when determining whether you want to eat at a particular stand:

  • Does the vendor wash her hands?
  • Do you observe the presence of soap and water?
  • Does the vendor touch the straw for your drink or does she allow only you to handle it?
  • Does she handle the food with plastic gloves or other protection? Is the stand crowded with lots of folks standing around eating? They probably know and trust the vendor.
  • Is the vendor in the same place every day? She won’t want to risk making regular customers ill.
  • Is the food hot and well cooked?

For the less adventurous, it is of course safest of all to eat only at restaurants that are recommended and cater to tourists. They will be well acquainted with standard international hygiene practices.

4. Know What To Do if Altitude Sickness Strikes

kuoda-blog-altitude-down-how-prevent-soroche-featured

It’s normal to experience shortness of breath and heart pounding at heights above 3000 meters, but if you develop symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, extreme fatigue, and sleeplessness, you may have acute altitude sickness, or Soroche. Drinking coca tea can be helpful. Also, drink plenty of fluids and take it easy for a few days. If your symptoms don’t improve, you can go to a lower altitude and then come back up in stages. You can also buy Diamox over the counter at most pharmacies, which may help with some of the symptoms.

Take These Tips With You On Your Peru Vacation

This-Healthy-during-Your-Vacation-in-Peru-Take-These-Tips

No one wants to travel all the way to Peru to be holed up in a bathroom or in bed the entire trip. But it does happen. Follow these four pointers and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a sick-free visit to Peru from start to finish.

Christmas in Peru: What to Expect and Where to Spend It https://www.kuodatravel.com/christmas-peru-expect-spend/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/christmas-peru-expect-spend/#respond Fri, 23 Dec 2016 15:05:38 +0000 http://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=12821

If your custom Peru vacation happens to fall during this festive time of year, you’re in for an exciting experience full of traditions, some familiar and others entirely new. Whether you’re finalizing details for your approaching Peru vacation or thinking ahead to next year, speak to your Kuoda Travel Designer today about how you can incorporate some of these Christmas traditions into your personalized Peru tour package.

Peruvian Christmas Traditions

kuoda-blog-nativity-scene-nacimiento

The Nativity Scene that almost all Peruvians set up in their households

Whereas much of the world celebrates Christmas on Christmas Day, Peru celebrates on Christmas Eve, or La Noche Buena. It’s a day full of family gatherings, good food, and religious tradition. The festivities officially begin in the evening of the 24th when families attend the misa de gallo, a special Christmas mass that begins at 10pm. After mass everyone returns home for what will be a long night of celebrations with family and friends. At the stroke of midnight, Peruvians dig into a Christmas feast of turkey, chicken or pork, tamales, and applesauce with close friends and family while fireworks ignite across the skies. Adults toast with champagne and children sip on hot chocolate between bites of panetón, a sweet bread filled with raisins and candied fruits. Gifts are exchanged after dinner and then sleepy kids are put to bed while the adults dance the night away with friends and family. For this reason, Christmas day is usually quiet in Peru with many sleeping in and resting from an eventful night prior.

Let Loose at Puno’s Party of the Year: Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria https://www.kuodatravel.com/let-loose-punos-party-year-fiesta-de-la-virgen-de-la-candelaria/ https://www.kuodatravel.com/let-loose-punos-party-year-fiesta-de-la-virgen-de-la-candelaria/#respond Wed, 19 Oct 2016 20:41:31 +0000 http://www.kuodatravel.com/?p=9637

Held alongside Lake Titicaca, in the port city of Puno, the Feast Day of the Virgin of Candlemas (La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria) is celebrated annually during the first two weeks of February. Recognized with a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation, the event features parades, colorful costumes, live traditional music, choreographed dancing and fireworks. It’s worth timing your personalized Peru family trip to coincide with this exciting event.

What’s the Festival All About?

The festival dates back to the 16th century and celebrates the Virgin of Candelaria. Some believe the Virgin of Candelaria was an actual young woman who once protected the inhabitants of the Puno region from an attack by Bolivia. She is also seen as a symbol of the Pachamama, Mother Earth, and other times as a representation of the Christian Virgin Mary.

The festival has flourished over the years to become Puno’s party of the year, continuing for a total of 18 days. The most important day of the festival is 2 February, when a representation of the Virgin is paraded through the streets. On this day, the city is taken over by a procession of dancers and musicians dressed in elaborate costumes. These costumes can cost more than a month’s salary and take many months to create.

What Do the Dances Mean?

One of the main dances of the festival is the Diablada (Dance of the Demons), which combines elements of Andean indigenous beliefs with the Catholicism introduced by the Spanish. Dancers wear masks decorated with gold and silver jewelry, colorful gemstones, coin and glass mirrors. These outfits can sometimes weigh up to 60 pounds (27 kilograms)! Performed throughout Peru, Bolivia and Chile, this dance represents the struggle between the forces of good and evil.

The dance draws on an ancient Aymara legend, which tells the story of a group of miners trapped in an underground cavern by Supay, an evil demon who lived inside the earth. The miners decided to commit their souls to the Virgin of Candelaria who ultimately saves them from death.  The Diablada combines the Virgin of Candelaria legend with the parable of St. Michael the Archangel leading God’s armies against satanic legions. The result is a celebration that honors both religious traditions.
